The Tanzania Ports Authority signed a memorandum of understanding with Africa Global Logistics (AGL, an MSC subsidiary) to design, build, and operate the first three of a planned 28 berths. The budget assigned to this first phase — berth foundations and access works — was reported at roughly $9.3 million, a small fraction of the project's headline $10 billion cost.

Confirmed, but this is the adjoining zone, not the port — 31 May 2026
A Tanzanian parliamentary committee visited the Bagamoyo Special Economic Zone on 30–31 May 2026 and verified 24 investors with land already assigned as of 20 May 2026, with site-preparation works under way. This is the first activity in the project's history confirmed by direct observation rather than by announcement — but it is the SEZ, a legally and physically separate development from the port itself. Civil works — dredging, access channel, berth construction — were said to begin this month, with a three-year timeline projected for the first three berths.

Contradicts the January 2026 announcement — 27 July 2026
TPA Director General Plasduce Mbossa told Daily News that physical works had not yet started as of that date, and were expected to begin "next month" (August 2026). (Daily News, 27 July 2026.)

No independent source confirms that dredging began in August 2026 as Director General Mbossa said it would. This page will update as soon as a source — satellite imagery, a contractor report, or further TPA statements — says otherwise.

Denied — February 2025
Reports that Saudi Arabia had acquired the port under a $10 billion "East Gate" programme were denied within days by Tanzania's Minister of Planning and Investment, who told Parliament the claim was "fake news" and that no agreement had been signed with any investor.
Why this page exists. Press coverage of Bagamoyo returns only when there's a new announcement; it rarely follows up on whether the last one happened. This page's job is to hold that line open and say, plainly, when nothing has changed.
