Bagamoyo Special Economic Zone
Also marketed as the "Bagamoyo Eco-Maritime City." A 9,800-hectare industrial zone next to the port project, managed separately from it — and, unusually for this project, with investors confirmed on the ground rather than only announced.
A separate project, often described as one
Press and investment portals frequently describe "Bagamoyo" as a single project, but the port and the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) are administered separately. The SEZ falls under Tanzania's Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) and the Tanzania Investment and Special Economic Zones Authority (TISEZA); the port itself is a Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) project. What's confirmed
Confirmed. A Tanzanian parliamentary committee visited the zone on 30–31 May 2026 and verified 24 investors with land already assigned as of 20 May 2026, including a textile factory (Sinovest) projected to create more than 10,000 jobs. Site-preparation works were under way at the time of the visit. (therespondents.co.tz, 31 May 2026.) This is the first activity anywhere in the wider Bagamoyo project confirmed by direct observation, rather than by announcement, since the original 2013 plan was suspended in 2019 — see the chronology.
The size, and the numbers that don't agree
The zone's master plan is consistently cited at 9,800 hectares by EPZA/TISEZA, of which 887 hectares are reserved specifically for the port itself — referred to in some sources as "Mbegani Modern Port" (therespondents.co.tz; Aphex). Wikipedia separately cites "1,700 hectares" for the special industrial zone, and Aphex elsewhere in the same article mentions "2,500 hectares." No source reconciles these figures; this page reports the disagreement rather than choosing one.

Also known as
Investment marketing material, including on tanzaniainvest.com and from TISEZA itself, refers to the combined port-and-zone development as the "Bagamoyo Eco-Maritime City." That is not a separate project — it is a brand name for the same port and SEZ described on this site.
